The first, naturally aspirated Rabbit, Golf, and Jetta Diesels got up to 50mpg under regular driving conditions, but they were barely able to keep up with today's freeway speeds. That all changed with the turbocharged direct injection Diesel -- the TDI -- engine, which produced an abundance of power and even more so torque.
The 2013 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Sportwagen is one of the infamous "Diesel Gate" cars that boosted a secret software to cheat emissions. Volkswagen was ordered to buy all those cars back, refurbish them, and re-sell them with an extensive extended warranty.
The engine of this TDI has just been serviced which included the installation of a new particle filter. It runs incredibly well with zero leaks or other issues to report and comes with a new California Smog Certificate.
This Sportswagen comes loaded with 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox, which has two clutches that control 3 gears each. It is exceptionally responsive, unlike any other "automatic" transmission I've ever experienced. Other options include the multi-panel panoramic glass roof, air conditioning, cruise, power windows, doors, seats, remote entry, bluetooth, navigation, and 17" alloy wheels.
Since the car has never been apart, panel fit is perfect and all doors and hoods shut with the characteristic clunk.
The factory paint is in good original condition with just minor signs of use. There are two scratches on the left passenger door, and a ding on the rear bumper cover.
The panoramic glass roof has two separate panels that can be operated in multiple positions. It works perfectly.
Dash is flawless, driver's seat shows a bit of wear in the lower front panel.
All of the gauges and lights work as they should.
Center display switches between radio, navigation, and phone. The car has a working Siri radio.
Rear bench seat seats 3 adults. Back rests can be individually folded forward.
The TDI has 250 ft.-lbs. of torque, which puts it in V8 territory. It climbs steep hills effortless without the need to shift into a lower gear!
Real world fuel economy is about 42 miles to the gallon.
With the rear seat backs folded forward, the Sportwagen offers a large cargo area.
If you are looking for a work horse that delivers hybrid-like fuel economy but without the electronic nightmares associated with computers on wheels, this TDI is a worthy candidate.
