2013 Chevrolet Volt Premium
EV with Range Extender

While the US Government classifies the Chevrolet Volt as a "hybrid," because it has 2 different engines, that really isn't an accurate classification.
The Volt is a purely electric vehicle. It is powered by an electric motor, and the power is transmitted straight to the front wheels. There's no transmission to break; it's 1 gear only, just like a Tesla.

Once the battery power is exhausted, a 4-cylinder gas engine works like a generator, providing power to the electric motor, hereby eliminating range anxiety. This "gas engine" doesn't work like a regular gas engine; instead, it just putters along like a generator on an RV, with low revs, very mellow, thus lasting a lifetime or two and needing only an oil change every 20,000 miles. GM calls it a range extender, which hits the nail on the head.

Better yet, the General purposely over-engineered the Volt -- there's one with 468,000 miles on the clock -- hoping to dethrone the Prius. It never happened, and it took Toyota another 12 years to get their 2024 model Prius to the level of a 2011 Volt. Finally it has a decent battery-only range, and the gas motor works, like the Volt's, to just provide juice to the electric motor that provide propulsion via the front wheels.
Chevrolet's Volt was 12 years ahead of this!

While pretty much bullet proof, the Volt has 2 Achilles heels: (1) the battery, and (2) the coolant.
Let's start with the battery, shall we?
When buying a pre-owned Volt, battery-only range is very important! Well, almost. When new in the wrapper, the Volt had 38 miles of battery-only range. Ten years later, the range should be still about 33 miles or more, and this particular Volt still gets 33 miles to 35 miles of battery-only range, indicating a healthy battery pack.

Also included are both factory key fobs, as in Chevrolet original, not aftermarket.

Tags are current and the car is in truly exceptional condition, inside and out, with zero flaws and zero issues to note.

Achilles heel number 2 is the coolant. Volts use a specific collant for the engine, the hybrid battery, and the electronic brain. It has to be flushed as scheduled and needs to be orange.
This one has always been serviced properly, and all 3 reservoirs show fresh orange coolant at the correct levels.

The power train is perfectly healthy. We changed engine oil, engine filter, air filter, and cabin filter and performed a thorough safety inspection. There's nothing on this car that could be improved.

This Volt has never been in an accident. The body is straight as an arrow and displays perfect gaps and shut lines. All of the factory paint is in exceptional condition, showing that the sole owner of this car took exceptional care of it.

Volt rides on the rare-as-hens'-teeth 17x7 "5 Y-Spoke" premium wheels, fitted with a set of almost new tires that have about 90% of life left. These hweels are so rare that we have never seen another Volt in the wild with these.

All of the paint is factory original, and in outstanding condition. There are no dings, dents, or scratches to note. None.

Facory headliner and sunvisors are "like new" as well, with no sagging anywhere. All vanity lights work, of course.

Volt's dashboard is very spaceship like, with graphic digital displays about . . . well . . . pretty much everything. You can choose between the 4 drive modes of Normal, Sport, Hold and Mountain, and since it's the Premium model, there's a collision warning system and a lane departure warning as well. Keeping the green ball dancing in the center ensures optimal driving performance.

Center console houses the secondary screen.

You can choose it to show the audio system, the navigation, the climate system, power flow and charging settings, or bluetooth phone operation. When in reverse, it will switch to the back-up camera.
Everthing on this car works as it should, with no problems of any kind to report.

Seats are partial leather, very comfy, and in excellent condition.

Since the battery pack is located in the car's center, the Volt is a 4-seater, with 2 single seats, foldable armrest, and dedicated console with dual cupholders in the back.

There's not a single rip or tear anywhere on this car, and all of the carpeting is clean and stain free as well.

Everything works on this Volt, and it comes with a clean California title, a clean Carfax report (proving it's a 1-owner vehicle), and a new California Smog Certificate.

Trunk features 2 removable screens -- one horizontal, as shown, one vertical -- to protect luggage from preying eyes. Rear seats can be folded forward individually, hereby creating a large cargo space.
Note: factory charging cable is stored in a separate cavity below the trunk floor.

Compared to a Prius, the Volt is really the better car. The Prius is a true hybrid, where both, the electric engine and the gas engine, feed an CVT automatic transmission that delivers power to the wheels. In contrast, the Volt is really an electric car, but unlike a pure electric car that stops when you run out of juice, the Volt's on-board generator kicks in when the battery is depleted and charges the battery while at motion.

What that means is that if your daily commute is about 30 to 35 miles, the Volt will drive like a Tesla. You come home, plug it in, and the next morning you are leaving again with a full battery.

If you need to go on a longer trip, the Volt will keep going even with depleted battery. All this is very complex and expensive to manufacture, which is why GM killed the Volt in 2019, just like they killed the EV1 back in 1999.
